On Friday three natural gas pipelines have been attacked by artillery fire in the self-proclaimed republic of Donetsk, reports Russian news agency TASS citing gas supplying company Donbassgas. The supplier added that repair units have already started fixing damages on the site. Earlier this week the tension between two countries got stronger after Crimea was attacked. After that there were some predictions that gas prices will move up, but instead of that their decline continued. Market experts suppose that it’s a sign of a gas glut on the European market. Russia transfers around 40 percent of all European gas supplies through the pipelines on the Ukrainian territory. Taking into account the situation in the region there was a plan to build a pipeline bypassing Ukraine called Nord Stream-2, but last week Gazprom’s partners in the project – Shell, OMV, French Engie, and German Uniper and Wintershall – gave up the merger plan. Most probably their decision was influenced by the position of Poland which supposes that it could stimulate unfair competition. |
