The European Experience of Oil Restoration (Oil restoration)
At the turn of the century, humanity has the choice: attend to environmental problem or face extinction. Millions of tons of waste from various sources are a direct threat to existence of the human race.

A liter of waste oil makes unusable up to one million liters of water. No plants or animals can exist in such an environment.

The situation with waste oil in the European Union is as follows. Approximately 25% of oil is disposed of illegally, while 75% is collected. Of the collected oil, 25% is restored, 48% is burned as fuel. Apparently, the situation is far from the ideal, but there there are achievement as well.

Oil Restoration in the EU

The priority of oil restoration in the European Union has been declared in a special Directive. In practice, not all member nations follow these regulations fully, but the legislation is a good motivation for responsible treatment of waste oil.

At this time, 28 facilities are involved in restoration of oil in the EU, creating 4000 jobs. These facilities are designed to make new oil from the collected waste, and also to produce other substances: tar, asphalt, fuel etc. It turned out that waste processing can be profitable. The annual turnover of the waste oil restoration industry in the EU is up to 250 million Euro.

Currently, the main obstacle to development of oil restoration technologies is the lack of smooth collection and delivery of waste products. In many cases, waste oil never reaches oil restoration facilities, being burned in boiler houses.

What is waste oil restoration?

Oil restoration is the process of removing aging product, acidic compounds, decomposition products etc. Oil purification is different from oil restoration, The former usually involves removal of particulate matter, water and gas. Small amounts of contaminants can be removed by settling, centrifuging, heat and vacuum treatment.
The beginning of aging processes in the oil requires the use of oil restoration technologies. Adsorbents have demonstrated good results in restoration of oil properties. These are special substances, which can capture contaminants present in the oil. Passing through a layer of sorbent, the oil sheds the pollutants and is restored to its initial condition. The resulting product can be reused as originally intended or as a raw material for the production of new oils - turbine, transformer, motor or industrial.
