A Chinese hacking group has gained access to the email accounts of 25 American organizations, including multiple departments of the U.S. government. Microsoft discovered the hack but did not disclose which departments were targeted. According to the U.S. Department of State, no sensitive data was compromised. According to Microsoft, the espionage group attempted to access sensitive information through email. The technology company refers to the group as Storm-0558 and states that the hackers have also targeted Western European governments. A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State confirmed the presence of "anomalous activity." Immediate steps were taken to secure the systems, the spokesperson said. Microsoft reported that the hack occurred prior to U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken's visit to Beijing, which 'aimed to improve' the tense relationship between the United States and China. |
