Server Responsibility With Intoxicated Individuals
Every individual that drinks alcohol acts at least a little bit different as the night wears on. There are a few specific ways to tell if someone has had too much to drink and should be cut off from the alcohol source. There is a legal responsibility to do this as a server of alcohol to the public and be able to retain a TABC permit.

Lack of Coordination

Too much alcohol visibly changes the ability to walk, sit and stand normally. Coordination goes out the window once the threshold of having too much alcohol to drink is crossed. This is one of the easiest clues to look for in determining of an individual should be cut off from any more alcohol.

Slurred and Loud Speech

Increasingly slurred and loud speech is another quick sign that the person has had too much. What started as a calm and lucid person can turn into a loud, obnoxious individual that no one can understand. This is one that needs to be without alcohol for a while and then sent home.

Strong Alcohol Smell

It is normal for someone that has drank too much alcohol to have the smell begin to seep out the pores of their skin. There will be an undeniable strong odor of alcohol with their breath. This is one clue you can use in combination with any and all of the others to make an accurate call.

False Bravado

There is a reason more fights tend to break out as an evening of drinking alcohol progresses. Alcohol can remove natural inhibitions. Fights and aggressive behavior can develop out of nowhere. Individuals that have this problem after over-indulging normally begin to get more and more aggressive in language. It begins to cause noticeable friction with everyone else in the room.

The Eyes Have It

Someone that has crossed over into the realm of being drunk on alcohol will have difficulty focusing their eyes. They will take on an almost swollen, blood-shot appearance. They may experience bouts of staring at objects and fumble through pockets looking for money or car keys.

Immediate Solutions

You should immediately cut off anyone you suspect of being drunk from getting access to more alcohol. Try and talk them into sitting and enjoying a non-alcoholic drink. Call them a taxi for a ride home, or find out if they came with a designated driver. The goal is to find them a safe and sober ride home. You do not want them to get into a vehicle and cause a deadly accident.
