Scotland produces enough wind energy to supply the whole country for a day

Scotland demonstrated its ability to supply the whole country with energy generated by wind power singlehandedly, says a new report published by The Guardian.

Recently there was a weather alert published by the UK meteorology department, forecasting winds reaching 115 miles per hour. The emergency caused transportation turbulence, affecting bridges, ferries and trains block, but renewable energy production in Scotland soared.

The Scotland branch of the World Wildlife Fund analyzed data from WeatherEnergy, which showed that Scotland produced 39,545 megawatt-hours with wind energy on Sunday. It covers the nation’s total consumption with more than two thousand megawatt-hours leftover.

The news of a spike in renewable energy was taken positively by both environmentalists and Scottish officials. The Scottish government’s spokeswoman explained that authorities “remain fully supportive of low-carbon technologies, which offer a huge economic opportunity for Scotland and have a key role to play in our fight against the threat posed by climate change to our society and natural environment.”
