Prisoners on Strike in Nizhny Novgorod Region

Massive riots have taken place in one of Nizhny Novgorod region prisons. Strikes and riots were mainly caused by poor conditions for prisoners who are not satisfied with the way they are treated.

The prison is located in Prudy village, Nizhny Novgorod region. Local prisoners arranged massive strikes and riot against poor conditions of detention. All wooden constrictions have been totally burnt while medical building was severely damaged. Guards of seven other prisons were called to help and stop the riot. At the same time representatives of local police department were used as negotiators.

According to available information the riot started in the evening on May 5. It all started with a conflict between prisoners which ended up with fighting and beating of one of the convicted. The rest of prisoners decided to defend him as he was hopeless to protect himself. As a result small local conflict grew into a massive strike which was mainly forwarded against violence and requisitions.

The incident resulted in 72 people injured. 21 of them are in a very hard condition. 5 of riot victims have been taken to the hospital.

Official prison representatives confirmed the fact that situation in their establishment was rather threatening. On the other hand they do not confirm the fact of riots and massive fighting on the territory of their prison.
