Nintendo expects to sell more of its Switch game computers than it used to be. The Japanese expect to be able to sell at least 19.5 million consoles in the current financial year that runs until April. That is 1.5 million more than previously anticipated. In the first nine months of the financial year up to and including December, Nintendo sold 12.6 million Switch devices. The Japanese, in collaboration with tech giant Tencent, started selling game computers in China in December. The company also started selling the simpler and cheaper Lite version of the Switch after the summer. Of these, 5.2 million have since been sold. The Switch has been on the market for around three years. Typically, a life cycle of five years applies to hardware. Microsoft and Sony competitors are at the end of that cycle with their devices. At the end of this year, new consoles are planned for those companies. Nintendo closed the quarter with an operating profit of 168.7 billion yen (1.4 billion euros) and raised its expectations for the current financial year to 300 billion yen. However, market experts had expected more. |
