The project is supposed to expand TransCanada Corp.’s ability to extract and deliver natural gas to consumers. Nevertheless, the company will need to solve the problem regarding caribou habitat. The recommendations were issued Wednesday and included 48 conditions, five of which included those relating to the protecting and restoring caribou habitat. Some concerns arose as the project crosses three woodland caribou ranges. The existing system includes 23,500 kms, with the new pipeline adding 230 kilometres. TransCanada spokesperson Mark Cooper characterised the project as “critical infrastructure” and “significant milestone” for the company and for the country. If the project is approved, the system will be put into service in April 2017. |
