Higher natural gas prices could lead to increasing coal consumption

The possibility of switching from gas to coal has been discussed on the conference in Houston. It was decided that it could happen and displace 1-2 Bcf/day burn demand.

The usual trend is to replace coal. Now at about 1 Bcf/d demand of gas could be switched back to coal. And that is despite environment regulations which already lead to 41 GW of coal retirement and another 15 GW which is expected to be replaced during nearest five years. After all, Clean Power Plan can have its own affect.

The threat of the Clean Power Plan and other regulations linked to the environment protection directly affect coal market. Seems like it should benefit from price rising but at the same time shrinking in amount of sells is quite possible.
