Former foreign Minister of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier was elected as the new President of the country. Elections were held yesterday, February 12. The inauguration of the new President scheduled for March. 61-year-old Steinmeier will be replaced by President Joachim gauck.

In Germany, the President selects the Federal Assembly: it consists of 630 deputies of the Bundestag and 630 representatives of the Federal States of the country. Absolutely the majority of the members of this body voted for the former head of the foreign Ministry – he's got the voice of 931 1260 possible. It should be noted that Steinmeier was initially considered the favorite and won in the first round.

It is important to emphasize that the real power in Germany is not in the hands of the President, and in the hands of the Chancellor – today is Angela Merkel. The President is rather representative role.
