Thanks to a bitcoin dealer's vigilance, internet scammers could not exchange all their stolen money for bitcoins. As a result, the victims, including an 80-year-old man who was raised for ˆ 14,000, partly saw their loss again. The police report this on Wednesday. The two elderly were victims of so-called help desk fraud. They were called last December by someone posing as an employee of a well-known software company. This person told the older gentleman that he had problems with his computer. Under the guise of solving the problems, the caller took over the man's computer. "The scammer told the man that his computer had to stay on all evening and night. While that gentleman was cooking his stuff, the scammers cleared his bill, "says detective Marius." The next day the man lost ˆ 14,000. A day later the scammers did the same trick with the lady. They transferred the older man's money to her bank account, and then transferred the money from her account to other accounts and various online crypto exchanges. There they exchanged part of the money for bitcoins. The scammers used the identity of the older lady in these bitcoin orders. In addition to the man's ˆ 14,000, they also received ˆ 1250 from the woman's bill, police said. Cryptobeurs Bitvavo.com did not trust the transaction, partly due to the advanced age of the woman, and held the bitcoins. They wanted to wait until the applicant herself would contact them for verification. Or until the police would report. "Six months after the scam, the money was still neatly waiting for the victims. Through the action of this company the injured parties still got a quarter of their loss back, "said the detective. |
